Uplifting the Kaupapa

Kānihi Māwhitiwhiti Pā has started waiata practices in preparation for future pā and hapū kaupapa.

There has been three sessions of waiata practice in the new wharenui and hearing the voices of hapū chant and sing has bought smiles and memories to everyone who so far has attended.

Katrina Taylor said “Thanks to those continuing to uplift the kaupapa and coming out at night to learn, sing and be together as a people!”

Those in attendance listened to the kōrero behind the compositions and when to use each waiata.

With waiata practice also being hosted online, it’s great to see the buildings technology being put to creative use. The design of the new wharenui also includes a raft of acoustic panels to accentuate the vocal range, giving a heightened feel of presence.

During one waiata session, hapū played Kahoot! A fun quiz like game to challenge the recent learnings of waiata. Aroha Noble said “if you like trivia and are smart all good if not to sure team up”

The next waiata practice is on Saturday the 3rd September 2022, after the monthly pā and hapū hui.
